Our psychologist completes pre-surgical bariatric psychological assessments for bariatric surgical programs in the Twin Cities. Research suggests that psychological issues interfere with postoperative adjustment and long-term treatment compliance for bariatric surgery clients. Additionally, pre-existing mental health issues increase the risk for a mood disturbance after surgery, which is the reason why these assessments are important.
To complete the evaluation, clients are seen for three to four visits. Our psychologist completes a thorough mental health assessment during the initial interview and reviews key factors that may be a deterrent to successful outcomes in bariatric surgery. In addition to the clinic paperwork clients’ complete objective psychological assessment tools and questionnaires.
Our psychologist integrates information from the interview, psychological tests/questionnaires, and clinic intake paperwork to determine if the client’s readiness for bariatric surgery. In certain circumstances there are reasons to post-pone surgery to a later time after the client follows recommendations, which our psychologist discusses with patients during the feedback session.
Prior to seeing us for an evaluation, we recommend that clients contact their insurance payer regarding coverage for psychological testing.
