State Licensing Guidelines For Virtual Psychiatrists & Online Counseling Services

Clients must be physically present in a state where their licensed therapist is authorized to practice. If you plan to travel, inform your provider in advance. Our psychologists, Drs. Hina Siddiqui and Mollie Newhouse, hold a PsyPact license, which allows them to provide online counseling services across multiple states (see the PsyPact map at https://bit.ly/PsyPact).

Frequently Asked Questions About Telehealth

What is telehealth? I want to know more about it.
Telehealth or telepsychology is another modality to offer mental health services. Instead of seeing your psychologist, therapist, or psychiatrist in person, you would meet them via an audio/video session.
Will Telehealth services be covered by my insurance?
Most insurance payers provide full coverage for telehealth services, just as in-person services. If you have any questions, best to contact your insurance provider to confirm coverage.
How do I prepare for my telehealth visit?
  • Please choose a private place.
  • Make sure your device (smartphone, laptop, desktop, or tablet) is set up and ready.
  • You would need a good internet connection for your telehealth visit.  For best results log on to your telehealth appointment using Google Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.
  • Some applications may slow down your internet connection, and it is best to close those applications during your telehealth visit.
  • Please review your appointment reminder email for detailed instructions regarding your telehealth visit. The link to your provider’s online waiting room will be on the email. It is just a click of a button to join your visit.
Can I see my provider for a telehealth visit while I am on vacation in another state or out of the country?

State licensing guidelines require clients to be physically present in the state where your provider is licensed. Unless your provider is licensed in the state where you will be going, you cannot see them for a telehealth visit. It is important to let your provider know prior to any travel plans if they can see you in another state.

Is a phone call the same as telehealth?
For a telehealth appointment, you and your provider should be able to have both audio and video in session. Most telehealth visits will include a video for the majority of the visit. A phone call is not a telehealth visit.
What are the benefits of a telehealth visit?
  • The main advantage of your telehealth appointment is the convenience of logging on to the appointment from the comfort of your own home,, office or car. Please ensure you are parked and not driving your car during your visit.
  • You will avoid driving time and decrease any stress from less travel or arrange for child care
  • You will have more control over your environment, such as space where you feel comfortable
  • Individuals who live in rural communities or who live further off from the cities have the option of seeing a provider who are further off and hence there is increase in access to good quality mental health services for them.
Is Online Mental Health Counseling Effective?

Yes, online mental health counseling is highly effective for many individuals. Research shows that virtual therapy can be just as beneficial as in-person sessions, especially for concerns like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and stress management. Telehealth counseling provides convenience, accessibility, and privacy, making it easier for people to seek help without barriers like travel or scheduling conflicts. Techniques such as CBT, EMDR, and DBT therapy can be successfully delivered online, helping clients develop coping strategies and improve mental well-being.

What Is the Best Online Mental Health Counseling?

The best online mental health counseling services offer:

  • Licensed therapists with expertise in various therapeutic approaches
  • Secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms for privacy
  • Flexible scheduling for therapy and medication management
  • Insurance coverage options to make the remedy more affordable

At Insights Psychology, we provide comprehensive online counseling services, including CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS therapy, and virtual psychiatrist appointments for medication management. We serve clients across PSYPACT states, ensuring high-quality care no matter where you are.

Who Is Not Appropriate for Teletherapy?

While telehealth counseling works well for most people, it may not be suitable for:

  • Individuals in immediate crisis or those experiencing severe psychiatric symptoms requiring hospitalization
  • People with active suicidal thoughts or self-harm behaviors who need in-person crisis intervention
  • Clients with severe cognitive impairments or conditions that make it difficult to engage in video-based therapy
  • Individuals without private, stable internet access or a secure environment to attend sessions

If someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, in-person support or emergency services are recommended.

What Is the Controversy with Online Therapy?

While online therapy has gained popularity, some concerns include:

  • Effectiveness for complex cases – Some argue that online therapy may not be as effective for severe mental health conditions that require in-person assessment.
  • Privacy & security risks – Although telehealth counseling platforms are HIPAA-compliant, there is always concern about data security.
  • State licensing restrictions – Therapists can only provide services in states where they are licensed, limiting access for some clients.
  • Lack of non-verbal communication – Some therapists find it harder to assess body language and subtle cues in virtual sessions.

Despite these challenges, telehealth counseling continues to evolve, making mental health support more accessible than ever.
